Food – Just Fuel or More Important?

22 Aug 2009

Food experts and parents up and down the country have been warning us since the beginning of time that “we are what we eat”. What they mean by this of course is that whatever we put into our mouths has a direct influence on our health, fitness, beauty and even mood. Because of this, we are forever being ordered to eat certain things, drink certain things and avoid lots of things. It sometimes all gets a little much to take in however, so here are 3 of substances that have the biggest impact on our bodies.

Salt. It is only reasonably recently that we have been made aware of the harm that salt can do to us. The Food Standards Agency in the UK state that people should have no more than 6g of salt and day and most people exceed this. If you are very active then you will need more salt in your diet as it is lost via sweating and important to muscle function but most people should cut down as high in salt intake is closely linked to high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke. Rather than put it in your body, salt is good at conditioning skin and is in fact an ingredient in lots of skin care products

Fats. We need different types of fat in our diets in order to maintain healthy cells and for all the various functions of the body. They are generally unsaturated fats that we need and not the type that most people get far too much of, which are saturated fats (AKA trans fats). Put simply, eating too many saturated fats will not only make you fat but could also cause heart disease, organ failure and diabetes to name a few. It won’t matter how many times you have a body polish, inside and out will not be great if you don’t watch your fats

Water. This is not something you eat of course, but you should not underestimate the power of the H20. Ideal water intake levels are dependent on factors such as temperature, body size, age, humidity etc, although most experts recommend taking in 1-2 lts per day if possible.Water is not only very important for internal processes of the body, but additionally it has a large influence on external appearances, so if your a big water drinker you wont need your skin firming treatments quite so often

Eating Right Today Means a Healthy Tomorrow

Proper nutrition can prevent future health problems. You must eat properly each day. The possibility of developing age related diseases can be greatly reduced by a healthy diet. The prevention of osteoporosis, type 2 diabetes and heart disease can all be assisted by eating right.

Lacking the correct information in the first place can make starting to eat right difficult. One approach could be to follow a conservative set of dietary guidelines to begin with. Then, as you become more conscious of your available choices, you can try to learn more.

A good (but hardly fashionable!) program is the USDA nutritional guideline. This particular guideline was created to generally improve health and reduce the probability of certain diseases. The guide can provide the nutritional information that you need to begin to make healthy eating choices.

For example, about three ounces of cooked fish is approximately the same size as a pack of playing cards? Eyesight comparisons such as this can make a significant difference in judging how much you should be eating. This helps you to keep your diet balanced even if you are on the run. None of us really have the time or inclination to actually weigh our food servings, so this is a great way to make a reasonable estimate.

Eating the correct portions and proportions of all the food groups is good for your health. By holding the serving sizes down, your calorie intake is reduced and you take in less fat, sodium, carbohydrates and more. In the long run, this could help to prevent high cholesterol or even high blood pressure.

There is a lot of false information out there today about nutrition. For example the cause of acne is eating unhealthy food like chocolate. This is not entirely true. No one knows with certainty what causes zits; however chocolate does not.

Another food myth is that eating candy or high amounts of sugar causes acne breakouts. Again, this is just not true. A closer relationship between stress and acne is more likely. The connection between acne and sugar has no supporting data. Of course that’s no reason to go out now and and grab a chocolate bar!

Don’t be distracted by the latest and greatest as far as healthy eating goes. Following a program like the USDA guidelines for practice will result in it becoming a habit. Soon enough it will be like second nature and you wont have to think about it. And, it will require as much thought as tying your shoelaces.

A simple method of working out if you are eating properly is to keep a food diary. Write down everything that you eat for a certain period of time, whether it is for three days or a week. If you are able to look at what you have eaten in the last so many days, I bet you would be shocked.

This is a perfect way to narrow down those categories of food that you need to cut back on. Remember to note down that candy bar you had from the vending machine at work! You don’t have to go crazy with every little detail but keeping a close record will reveal a pattern in short order.

Also, it’s easy to get swayed while out with friends, if they opt for unhealthy options, invariably so would you. So keep an eye out for that happening and maintain your healthy diet options. Of course it becomes far easier once you have reasonable knowledge as to what your choices are.

By following a practical nutritional guideline, keeping a food journal and sticking to healthy food options, you will become a healthy eater in the end. Hopefully you wont have to worry about health problems like diabetes and heart disease and possibly you could even get rid of acne!

Are Supplements Right for Your Body?

Just turn on the TV and you’ll see that fitness and health are important topics with just about everyone these days. You can tell by all the health-related magazines, TV and radio programs and Web sites everywhere you turn. Health information has become more common because it’s hard to stay healthy in our modern world and people are asking for all the help they can get. That’s probably because as a society our diets aren’t as naturally rich with vitamins and minerals as they used to be. Consuming calories from junk food that taste good but offer no nutrition has created a world filled with people who weigh more than they want to and are generally less healthy. That move away from what’s natural for us also means we don’t have the same intuitive understanding of what’s good for our bodies that our ancestors might have had, because in addition to fostering the trend toward eating junk food, the industrial age has caused a shift away from manual labor for many. That combination has created the need to find other ways to stay healthy.

On the surface, people look and feel more attractive if they’re fit. But as you delve deeper, you’ll discover there are many other reasons to keep the body in great shape. To begin with, people who are healthy enjoy their lives much more and stay vibrant and disease-free so much longer. Good health allows them to achieve a quality of life they wouldn’t otherwise have. These are great reasons to work on your health. If you need even more incentive, though, consider your friends and family. I’ll bet they’d all say they want you to be healthy and fit so you can stick around for as long as possible!

One method people use to stay healthy is to take supplements and vitamins. But do they really work? I think you have to answer that based on your own experience but there have been quite a few studies that suggest there is great value in supplements. One good example of this are the studies spurred by the experience of World War II English Royal Air Force pilots whose night vision improved when they ingested bilberry. Scientists studied the affect of bilberries on eye health and established a reliable connection. In point of fact, recent studies have confirmed that bilberries or bilberry supplements improve visual acuity in healthy people, and can also aid those who have eye diseases like age-related macular degeneration (AMD), glaucoma and cataracts. Other supplements also have been proved to have a positive impact on vision eye care, such as lutein and vitamin A. And these are only a few vision-related examples. The Internet is full of documentation that details research studies on every possible substance. Of course, I don’t know how many of these other substances had the same glowing reports as bilberry. It’s important to do your own research, making sure you get the latest research data available. Remember, supplements carry risks just like medicines, so don’t take them lightly. But don’t let that stop you either. Just be thorough with your research and then do what you feel is best, based on what you discover.

Overcome Heartburn Indigestion Problems

A mild but uncomfortable burning sensation in your throat and chest may be a sign of heartburn especially if you have just eaten. Not everyone will be affected by the different foods that seem to trigger heartburn for some other people. People that get a lot of heartburn may be more susceptible to the foods that are know to cause problems.

The sensation we know as heartburn occurs when the lower esophagus sphincter (LES), a muscle band that should separate the stomach from the esophagus, fails to do its job.

The result is that the stomach contents including some of the gastric acids are able to move upwards causing irritation to the esophagus and this is what is known as an acid reflux.

Most of the time the LES functions perfectly and causes no problems whatsoever but if it does get out of control it will lead to the uncomfortable sensation of heartburn indigestion.

People who are particularly susceptible to heartburn indigestion will wish it would go away to avoid discomfort after almost every meal. Fortunately there are some natural remedies for heartburn that might help reduce the problem and cut down on that fiery sensation in your chest.

Eating a healthy diet is probably the easiest natural remedy for heartburn you can try and it is one that has proved very effective in helping people to prevent it. If you can avoid the foods that cause heartburn and eat smaller portions you can reduce the problem. Rushing over meals may be an additional problem so if you can, take more time over your meals.

Following these steps can significantly cut down the frequency of bouts of heartburn and while this natural remedy for heartburn will not cure you it will reduce your predilection to it.

When you experience heartburn think about the different foods you have recently eaten to see if there is a common cause. Cutting back on the foods that are known to be higher risk for heartburn sufferers should reduce the occurrences of heartburn.

An Introduction to Organic Skin Care

3 Aug 2009

Many people find organic skin care mysterious. We tend to have a general idea that organic things are good for us. But most of us do not really know the definition of the word organic. We probably assume that organic skin care labels mean a product is good for our skin because it is natural. This is partly true, but there is far more to organic skin care than natural ingredients alone. You need to understand how to interpret ingredients in order to get the most out of any organic skin care investment.

By law, the word organic means that a product contains 95 percent organic ingredients. Something that is organic contains carbon. It follows that a product that contains 95 percent carbon-based ingredients can be considered organic. In terms of skin care products, this means a petroleum and petroleum-based product can easily be labeled organic. You need to understand this so you can look out for ingredients like methylparaben, a suspected carcinogen that is petroleum-based and plays a role in many skin care products. Certainly the term organic skin care does not usually call to mind crude oil derivatives and a threat of breast cancer. As a result, you need to be very careful to reconcile your interpretation of organic skin care with the legal definition before you buy.

Knowing ahead of time what you are looking for in organic skin care will help you get the products you want. Most people want natural, unaltered ingredients whenever possible. (Of course there may be some basic processing and preservatives in there for health reasons.) Usually, people also think “green” when they think organic. They want to know that they have invested in a product that did not harm the environment.

Ultimately, to get the best product for you, read the label. Look for compounds that have been derived from other things. Take “Cocamide-DEA derived from coconut oil.” You might think that this is organic because it comes from a natural substance. However, the processing includes the use of a known carcinogen. Usually derived ingredients are not organic in the sense that most of us use the word.

You should also factor in water content when you are determining how organic a product is. In many cases, a 75 percent organic product will have nearly 75 percent water. Generally speaking, organic skin care products should be totally organic or not labeled organic at all.

You will love the results you get from using truly organic skin care products. Your skin is a natural organ and will benefit from natural elements. However, in order to get the most out of your organic skin care investment, you need to be able to spot the “good stuff” out of the wolves in organic clothing.

Vitamin C Skin Care:Soft, Kissable, Skin. Thanks To Oranges?

3 Aug 2009

In many ways vitamin c and skin care are match made in heaven.  Vitamin c has the main function of aiding in collagen production.  Collagen is what gives our skin cells elasticity and youthfulness. With it’s help we can renew our skin when we are wounded and also cure our bones.  Caring for our skin internally involves vitamin c, but now medicine and beauty care are trying to include it topically.  There are some hurdles to follow in this marriage of vitamin c in skin care creams and lotions.

Vitamin c is highly unstable when utilized away from its natural formats.  It oxidizes easily and can become dangerous or ineffective for its purpose.  There is no doubt as to vitamin c’ skin care effectiveness.

To remedy the main components problem with instability, ascorbic acid is being picked apart to find more stable usable components of the nutrient.  There are studies which show that vitamin c needs to be concentrated and applied under the appropriate conditions to be absorbed properly into our skin so as to offer us the best skin care benefits.

Products Currently Offering The Best Vitamin C Skin Care

Any products that offer vitamin cin a form that is absorbed by the skin and is concentrated is one that is going to give the best skin care and deliver the vitamin c the best.  Many products offer different derivatives of vitamin c but one of the most popular is a vitamin c skin care derivative known as Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate or MAP.  This derivative is less oxidizing and more stable than L-ascorbic acid, which is natural source vitamin c.  The caution with any vitamin c skin care product is that they deteriorate in air and light, so they must be kept sealed and in cool dark areas until used up, and many do not have long shelf lives.

Vitamin c skin care products are so popular simply because amongst all the skin care products vitamin c has the most scientific proof of its actual ability to help remove fine lines, wrinkles and other skin imperfections.  It is however very hard to maintain in a product and makes it very expensive to have as a treatment.  Some spas claim that mixing vitamin c powder directly into facial creams immediately before treatment works as well, however ascorbic acid can be irritating to the skin.  Caution when looking into products for your skin make sure you talk to a professional about their process if you go to a spa.Read the ingredients of the sourcing product and the science which is claimed in their product before having it.  An average cost for a small 50ml vial of real vitamin c skin care product known as legitimate concentrate and is used in spas and other skin care facilities is about $60 to $100, so if you buy a large bottle doting vitamin c added and it has a sale sticker of $10, more than likely you are not getting the same benefits.

Many food are enriched with vitamins and minerals, like breads, pastas, and cereals. Information about vitamins listed on packaging includes the percentage of the daily recommended allowance of each, which will give you a pretty good idea how much you are getting of a certain vitamin or mineral. Calcium is an important mineral for women, and most sources about vitamins state that women should consume at least 1200-1500 mg of calcium daily. Most calcium supplements only contain 30-50% of the recommended daily amounts and must be supplemented by diet intake of other sources, such as cheese, yogurt, milk, and ice cream. About vitamin D, this is an important vitamin and is essential to bone health, and is included in some calcium supplements as well. Vitamin D can be absorbed through the skin via sunlight too, but for those in the northern states, this is not always the case. You can also consider Aloe Vera juice as the benefits of aloe vera juice is that it is a great detoxifier for the body.  And it is exceptionally complimentary if you are on master cleanser recipe diet.

Diet Food Nutrition Helps Shed Weight

1 Aug 2009

Losing weight is something that many people are struggling with today. There are numerous reasons for that. To name just a few of the reasons, humans are now eating huge amounts of food and most of it is high in calories, preservatives, and other chemically processed ingredients. We have horrible eating habits and this is mainly due to the fact that most people know nothing of health nutrition. If you want to get in shape and feel better, it is important to learn about diet food nutrition. Find out which foods you should eat, when you should eat them, and how much of them you should eat. With this diet food nutrition information at the forefront of your brain, you will be much better armed to deal with the problem of losing weight.

The Best Food Options

Diet food nutrition is based on foods that are in or close to their natural state, such as fruits, vegetables, lean meats, and whole grains. Stay away from over processed foods such as sugar coated items, cereals, and white bread. There are tons of books out there about diet food nutrition, or you can do a simple search online and find a lot of free information as well Diet food nutrition should be understood at least a little by anyone who wishes to lose weight or get in shape.

When Should You Eat?

You don’t have to be seriously restrictive with diet food nutrition in order to lose weight. You’re probably doubting that is true, but there is a reason for it. The trick is to eat more often but in smaller portions. The typical diet food nutrition program requires you to eat about every three hours or so. One way to eat a healthy meal is to include protein, a complex carbohydrate source, and some veggies or a fresh fruit on the side. These should be small portions. If that is too much food for you to take in, consider using a protein powder or premixed energy shake. These supplements not only supply your body with the nutrients it needs, but they also help you burn more fat and keep your stomach full longer.

Figure Out Your Daily Needs

Perhaps you are confused about eating so many little meals every day. You still may be wondering how much you should eat. After all, you don’t want to eat too little because you don’t want to feel sluggish. Similarly, you don’t want to eat too much because the excess calories could be converted to fat. There is a simple way to figure out how many calories you need by dividing your current weight by either thirteen, fourteen, or fifteen, depending on your daily activity level. If you are trying to lose weight, just take five hundred calories off of that total. If on the other hand you are just trying to maintain your current weight, then you can have success with diet food nutrition without subtracting anything and just dividing your food out over the day.
