Are Supplements Right for Your Body?

Just turn on the TV and you’ll see that fitness and health are important topics with just about everyone these days. You can tell by all the health-related magazines, TV and radio programs and Web sites everywhere you turn. Health information has become more common because it’s hard to stay healthy in our modern world and people are asking for all the help they can get. That’s probably because as a society our diets aren’t as naturally rich with vitamins and minerals as they used to be. Consuming calories from junk food that taste good but offer no nutrition has created a world filled with people who weigh more than they want to and are generally less healthy. That move away from what’s natural for us also means we don’t have the same intuitive understanding of what’s good for our bodies that our ancestors might have had, because in addition to fostering the trend toward eating junk food, the industrial age has caused a shift away from manual labor for many. That combination has created the need to find other ways to stay healthy.

On the surface, people look and feel more attractive if they’re fit. But as you delve deeper, you’ll discover there are many other reasons to keep the body in great shape. To begin with, people who are healthy enjoy their lives much more and stay vibrant and disease-free so much longer. Good health allows them to achieve a quality of life they wouldn’t otherwise have. These are great reasons to work on your health. If you need even more incentive, though, consider your friends and family. I’ll bet they’d all say they want you to be healthy and fit so you can stick around for as long as possible!

One method people use to stay healthy is to take supplements and vitamins. But do they really work? I think you have to answer that based on your own experience but there have been quite a few studies that suggest there is great value in supplements. One good example of this are the studies spurred by the experience of World War II English Royal Air Force pilots whose night vision improved when they ingested bilberry. Scientists studied the affect of bilberries on eye health and established a reliable connection. In point of fact, recent studies have confirmed that bilberries or bilberry supplements improve visual acuity in healthy people, and can also aid those who have eye diseases like age-related macular degeneration (AMD), glaucoma and cataracts. Other supplements also have been proved to have a positive impact on vision eye care, such as lutein and vitamin A. And these are only a few vision-related examples. The Internet is full of documentation that details research studies on every possible substance. Of course, I don’t know how many of these other substances had the same glowing reports as bilberry. It’s important to do your own research, making sure you get the latest research data available. Remember, supplements carry risks just like medicines, so don’t take them lightly. But don’t let that stop you either. Just be thorough with your research and then do what you feel is best, based on what you discover.

Why are People Getting Fatter and Fatter?

Millions of people all over the world are getting fatter every year. Countries where obesity has never before been a problem are now facing widespread cases of obesity. It seems that nobody is safe from the ever expanding waistline. So why is the human population exploding with fat? The answer is simple: inadequate nutrition. Nutrition is something that we are severely lacking when it comes to what we eat, how much we eat and when we eat. With fast food restaurants on nearly every corner, portion sizes steadily getting out of control and even the types of food becoming more fat, sugar and preservative laden, it’s no wonder we can no longer see our own feet. However, there is a way to turn this around, and the answer lies in gaining knowledge about nutrition.

Eat for Energy

These days it is all about the taste of our food and how much we can consume, and we have forgotten that it is meant as an energy source. We should eat only to fuel our bodies for daily activities. There is only so much food our bodies can burn for energy immediately, and the excess is stored as fat in case of a famine. Spite and revenge are not the reasons our bodies pack on the weight. Fat supplies are a natural and necessary part of human functioning.Fat serves an extremely important purpose: protecting the bones, organs, and muscle as well as keeping the body warm. It also serves as a back up source of energy in case food suddenly becomes unavailable. When we overeat and the excess calories are not burned off through exercise, they are stored in the fat cells for later use. With all that we’re eating these days, that fat is accumulating at a rapid rate.

The Key is Balance

Balanced nutrition is the solution. You don’t have to give up your favorite foods, treats and desserts. To keep from gaining excessive fat stores, you just need to keep these foods to the occasional treat instead of a daily splurge. A regular intake of vegetables, fruits, and lean meats combined with nutrition supplements like vitamins will keep your body healthy. When you stick to healthy nutrition on a daily basis, your favorite fatty foods will be a great reward from time to time. As long as you are burning the extra calories off through a consistent exercise program, you can maintain a trim waistline and have a little treat once, maybe even twice a week.

If You Have a Weight Problem

If you’re already overweight and you want to lose that weight, proper nutrition along with exercise is the only way to do it. The fastest way to see weight loss success is to eat a balanced diet broken into smaller meals (6 meals works best) and workout thirty minutes or more at least three days a week. Despite the multi-billion dollar a year weight loss product industry, there is no easy way out of obesity. It does take work. If exercise scares you, relax because it doesn’t have to be super intense like you see in all the infomercials and commercials all over the TV. If you are sticking to a diet with balanced nutrition, simply walking around the neighborhood after dinner each night will burn off enough calories to produce weight loss.

Why Are People Becoming So Obese?

Good Nutrition Is Never Wrong

Your body is a direct result of your genes, what you eat and how much you exercise. Well you don’t have much control over your genetics, but you do have control over your diet and how much you go to the gym. If you try to starve yourself to get thin you may be successful at first. However, you are doing great harm to your body and eventually the need to eat will overcome you. That is why it is better to eat smart by eating healthy.

Balance Is Important

Balance is at the center of good nutrition. You can still eat your favorite meals, snacks and sweets. To avoid getting overweight you will need to balance these carefully. You should eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, lean meats and you should even take some nutrition supplements such as vitamins. Use your treats and desserts as rewards for yourself for doing so well on your nutrition throughout the week. You can maintain a healthy weight by eating well for an entire week and then splurging one or even two days during that week; provided that you burn off the excess calories with exercise.

Are You Overweight?

If you’re already overweight and you want to lose that weight, proper nutrition along with exercise is the only way to do it. For those who already eat a balanced diet, try eating smaller meals more often. (like six meals daily) and get at least thirty minutes of exercise three to five times per week, that weight will come off in no time. Weight loss has no quick fix.  You have to work at it. However, you don’t have to do like the commercials and infomercials show; where everyone’s sweating and panting until they die. If your nutrition is balanced, you can burn enough calories to lose weight with just a few walks around the block each day.

If you go to see, it seems to be a lot of food that you are actually eating, even if you are eating smaller portions. The Importance of Nutritional Balance

It is of utmost importance that your food intake is nutritionally balanced so that you get optimum value from the food you eat. This is regardless of whether you want to lose weight or maintain your current weight and stay healthy at the same time. You should know how many calories you are supposed to take in everyday. If you want to maintain your weight and have a more or less sedentary lifestyle, you should take your weight and multiply it by 13 to get your ideal calorie intake. If you are moderately active, you should multiply it by 14 and if you are extremely active multiply it by 15. This sum will give you the number of calories you can take in to stay the same weight you are now. If you want to lose weight, however, you should reduce your calorie intake by 500, so that on a reduced calorie diet you will be able to achieve weight loss. In case you want to gain weight, you can increase your calorie intake by 500. However, it is even more important that you eat the right foods whether you want to lose, gain or maintain weight, because all calories do not come from the same kind of foods.

Cutting Out Junk Foods

There are lots of foods which have empty calories, that is the calories from the foods do not have any nutritional value whatsoever. Even if you take in nutrition supplements and think you are doing yourself a world of good by doing so, but are always eating junk foods like chocolate cakes, cookies, soda, desserts, high fat foods and the like, you are not doing the healthy thing. Your diet must have lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, lean meats and fish and more natural and high fiber foods which should make up at least ninety percent of your total food intake. Nutrition supplements like vitamins, protein shakes, protein bars and similar nutrition supplements can augment your meal intake and even, at times, substitute for some meals.

A Balanced Diet

It is vital to eat breakfast with carbohydrates and proteins so that you achieve some nutritional balance to start your day and help you go through it. A healthy breakfast would comprise of a high fiber cereal with skim milk and some fruit. Later, as a snack you can have a protein shake or a nutrition supplement and some fruit. Lunch can comprise a lean meat or fish dish along with a large helping of vegetables and some brown rice or whole wheat bread. Another nutrition supplement can be had as a snack when hunger pangs strike and dinner can be similar to lunch. If, at bed-time, you are hungry again, you can have another nutrition supplement, but make sure that you do not exceed your daily calorie intake, because it is easy for excess calories to turn to fat when you are asleep and you don’t want that to happen.

How Come We Are Getting Fatter?

All around the world, people are getting fatter and fatter. China, Japan and even Korea, who have never before had to worry about obesity, are now seeing the numbers on the scales rise higher and higher. It appears as if no one these days can escape the continuously expanding waistline. How come we are becoming so fat as a species? The answer lies in two words: poor nutrition. Based on the old adage “we are what we eat” it should be clear that our health and nutrition is severely compromised. Our ever-expanding girth should come as no surprise when fast food restaurants spring-up like weeds, individual serving sizes can feed at least two people and food quality has decreased. An answer does exist, though it can only be found by learning about proper nutrition.

Food Gives Us Energy

Today we keep our focus on food and it’s taste, as well as the quantity of it we eat, and we often overlook the basic fact that food is just our fuel. Food is what gives us the energy we all need to sustain us throughout the day. We develop fat when we give our body too much fuel. When taking fat into consideration, our body’s are merely acting as they were designed. It is not our body’s way of getting back at us or being spiteful. Aside from preventing starvation, fat basically provides heat to our body and insulation to our bones, internal organs and even to our muscles. When we eat too much, and we don’t burn off those calories with exercise or everyday activities, the excess gets turned into fat. With so much food we consume nowadays, our fat is increasing at a quickening pace.

Know Thy Enemy

Fat does not appear out of thin air, fat is something that we gain slowly over time if we are not cautious. They say that knowledge is power, but that is only true if you use it. Eating healthy, taking nutrition supplements and exercising is the best way to fight weight gain. Know your enemy and you will be able to vanquish them. Don’t stop gaining knowledge and use what you learn and you will be prosperous at whatever you do.
